G57.5: Tarsal tunnel syndrome

The passageway for your medial popliteal nerve at your inner ankle has narrowed.

On the inside of the ankle there is a tunnel-like passageway. This tunnel is made up of bone and ligaments. The medial popliteal nerve runs through this tunnel. The medial popliteal nerve gives off its other branches here.

If the tunnel-like passageway narrows, it can damage the medial popliteal nerve. When this nerve is damaged, the sensation at the rear of the inner ankle or on the sole of the foot can change. This can manifest itself through pain, tingling or numbness, for example. The nerve damage may be lasting or temporary.
