G61.0: Guillain-Barré syndrome
You have Guillain-Barré syndrome.
Many nerves run from the spinal cord and brain to the organs, skin and muscles in the body. With Guillain-Barré syndrome, various nerves very rapidly become inflamed. The nerves, or the sheaths around the nerves, are damaged by the inflammation.
The exact cause of the disease is unknown. It is thought that parts of the body are being attacked by its own immune system. The condition can occur when someone is infected by certain bacteria or viruses, for example. It can also occur after surgery or a vaccination.
The symptoms depend on which nerves are affected. It can be painful. Muscles may get weaker or be completely paralyzed. You may no longer feel touch properly, or you may feel a tingling. The symptoms may begin in the legs, for example, and then spread to other parts of the body. If the respiratory muscles are affected, breathing may become more difficult. Many other symptoms are possible. You may be very severely ill.
