G71.0: Muscular dystrophy

You have a disorder as a result of which your muscles are getting weaker and weaker.

Muscles are made up of many long cells. These cells form the muscle fibers. With this disorder, muscle cells are destroyed and sometimes replaced by fat or connective tissue. This disease is hereditary. Other family members may also be affected.

With this disorder, the person has symptoms of varying degrees of severity, depending on which muscles are affected. The symptoms often become more severe over time.

Sometimes the muscles in the arms or legs get sore or become weaker. It may also become impossible to move properly as a result. Other organs are also sometimes affected by the disorder. One’s eyes may no longer open properly, or swallowing may become more difficult. If the respiratory muscles or the heart muscles are affected, the illness can be very severe.
