ICD-Code I23.5: Rupture of papillary muscle as current complication following acute myocardial infarction
The supports on your heart valve have torn after a heart attack.
A heart attack involves parts of the heart not getting enough oxygen-rich blood. As a result, the affected heart tissue gets damaged or dies.
There are 4 valves in the heart. These valves ensure that the blood flows in the right direction. So they have to close tightly. They also have to open up fully so that the blood can be properly pumped out of the heart. Two valves are attached to the inner wall of the heart by certain muscles. Your heart attack has made these muscles tear. When the muscles on the valves are torn, the valve may leak.
A tear in such supports can, for example, cause the heart to stop working properly. This can make you exhausted or get breathless.
