You have one or more cavities in the tissue in the mouth area.
The tissue in the mouth area includes the tongue and the salivary glands. It also includes the mucous membrane. The mucous membrane is a moist skin. The whole of the oral cavity is lined with mucous membrane.
Different types of cavities can occur in the tissue in the mouth area. The cavity type determines how it is structured. There are cavities that are filled with fluid. In other cavities there is special immune system tissue, for example. In yet other cavities there can be parts of teeth or hair.
The cavity type also determines whether it is large or small. If the cavities are very large, problems may occur. You may feel a swelling, for example. Large cavities may also press on the surrounding tissue or on nerves. This can then be painful.
