M66.16: Rupture of synovium Lower leg
The synovial membrane or the inner membrane of a tendon sheath has torn in your lower leg or knee.
The knee joint connects the thighbone (femur) to the lower leg. The kneecap is also part of the knee joint. There are 2 bones in the lower leg. These bones are called the tibia (shinbone) and fibula. There is also a joint immediately below the knee joint between the tibia and fibula.
Joints are encased in a joint capsule. A tendon sheath is a covering for the tendon. It cushions the tendon and contains a small amount of fluid. This reduces friction between the tendon and its surroundings. Joint capsules and tendon sheaths have a thin membrane lining inside.
When the thin membrane in joint capsules or tendon sheaths tears, the affected areas can swell up and tighten. You may also have pain.
