M90.44: Osteonecrosis due to haemoglobinopathy Hand

Bone tissue in your hand has died off due to a blood disorder.

Blood is made up of a liquid part and different blood cells, among other things. The blood cells include the red blood cells, the white blood cells and the platelets. The red blood cells carry oxygen from the lungs throughout the body. Red blood cells contain the red hemoglobin that gives blood its color. This pigment is important for carrying oxygen in the blood.

The blood disorder involves the red hemoglobin not forming correctly. If the red hemoglobin does not form correctly, it may be unusually shaped. Unusually shaped red hemoglobin can block blood vessels. When blood vessels get blocked the supporting tissue does not get enough blood. Bone tissue with an inadequate blood supply can die off.

When bone tissue has died off, the affected area can be painful. You may also no longer be able to move the affected site properly.
