P07.10: Newborn: Birth weight 1000–1250 g

There was a premature birth. At birth the child weighed less than 1250 grams.

A child is usually born from the 38th to the completed 42nd week of pregnancy and is then fully developed. The weeks of pregnancy are most commonly counted from the day of the last period. A birth is premature if the child is born before the end of the 37th week of pregnancy. When a child is born too early, it may weigh too little when it is born.

With a premature birth, some organs may not yet be properly developed. For example, if the lungs are not yet properly developed, breathing difficulties may occur.
