P54.4: Neonatal adrenal haemorrhage

There has been a bleed in the child’s adrenal glands.

There are two kidneys and two adrenal glands in the body. The kidneys and the adrenal glands are usually located high up towards the back in the abdomen. The adrenal glands are at the top of the kidneys.

When there are difficulties during the birth, certain manual interventions or tools may be needed. The child's adrenal glands may then get damaged. There may then be bleeding in the adrenal glands. During a birth, problems can occur with the child's breathing or circulation. The child may then be inadequately supplied with oxygen. As a result, there may also be bleeding in the adrenal glands.

There can be a variety of indications that the child has a bleed in its adrenal glands. There may be severe lethargy and a sucking weakness. The skin may turn yellowish. A pallor, a changed heartbeat and breathlessness may also indicate bleeding.
