P78.0: Perinatal intestinal perforation

The child's intestinal wall tore around the time of the birth.

The intestines are like a tube. There is a hollow space on the inside. The intestinal wall lies around this hollow space.

There can be various reasons why a baby's intestinal wall tears. A tear can occur in the intestinal wall if the intestinal wall is inflamed or damaged. Because of the tear, fluids and air can get out of the intestines into the abdomen. Such fluids can for instance be digestive fluids and feces. Inflammation can then occur in the abdomen.

If there is a tear in the child's intestinal wall there can be a variety of indications. The abdomen can be tight and bloated. The severely bloated abdomen can also cause breathing problems. The child's heart may also beat more quickly usual. The baby may also have fever.
