Q14.2: Congenital malformation of optic disc

The optic nerve head in your eye is changed due to a defect.

The optic nerve head is a round area in the retina. It forms the first part of the optic nerve. The optic nerve head does not have any light-sensitive sensory cells, which is why it is also known as the blind spot. As well as the nerve cells in the optic nerve, there also run blood vessels for the retina there.

While developing in the womb, many different types of tissue develop in the body. The organs and body parts develop out of the various types of tissue. If tissue fails to develop properly, defects can occur. If the optic nerve head does not develop properly, vision in the affected eye can be limited.
