Q52.1: Doubling of vagina

Because of a defect, the vagina is divided in two.

While developing in the womb, many different types of tissue develop in the body. The organs and body parts develop out of the various types of tissue.

The vagina is tubular and leads from the outside to the uterus. The vagina develops out of 2 adjacent tubes of tissue. As they develop, the lower sections of these two tubes usually merge into one another. In this way, a single elongated cavity forms.

If tissue does not develop properly in the womb, defects can occur. Because of a defect, there is a layer of separating tissue in the center of the vagina. As a result, there may be 2 entrances to the vagina.
