Q64.0: Epispadias

Due to a defect, the urethra is an open slit located on the upper side of the penis.

While developing in the womb, many different types of tissue develop in the body. The organs and body parts develop out of the various types of tissue. If the tissue does not develop properly in the womb, defects can result.

The urethra runs through the penis. The urethral opening is usually in the middle of the glans. If the urethra fails to seal properly while developing in the womb, it can form as a slit on the upper side of the penis. Then part or all of the urethra can lie open. With this defect, the penis can be distorted towards the abdomen. The penis may also be shorter and wider than usual. If the slit extends as far as the bladder, urine can be released in with no control.
