R64: Cachexia

You have lost a lot of weight. So you weigh much less than is normal for your size.

Everyone needs energy to grow and stay healthy. This energy comes from foods. With some disorders, the person has less energy available than they need. Muscles and fatty tissue are then broken down to get energy. As a result, the person loses weight and gets thinner over time. The person may then quickly feel tired and have less strength than usual.

There are various reasons why someone may have too little energy. With certain disorders, more energy than normal is required. The person may also eat less because of pain or loss of appetite. With some disorders, too, nutrition is not absorbed into the body as well.
