T08.1: Fracture of spine, level unspecified open

One or more vertebrae in your spine are broken or damaged.

The spine is made up of the individual vertebrae. Between every 2 vertebrae there is a vertebral disc. Most vertebrae consist of a vertebral body and a vertebral arch. The vertebral body bears the weight of the body. The vertebral arches lie on top of one another to form the spinal canal. The spinal cord lies in the vertebral canal.

Spine injuries can vary, and can affect different parts of the vertebra. Typical vertebral injuries may be fine tears or bruising. The vertebrae can also break into several small pieces. A vertebra may also become displaced.

You have an open fracture to your spine. An open fracture also involves injury to the surrounding tissue and to the skin above.
