T54.0: Toxic effect: Phenol and phenol homologues

You have been poisoned by a caustic substance in the phenols group.

Phenols are substances that are used in the chemical industry, for example. For example, there are phenols in dyes or synthetic resins. But phenols can also be used in drug manufacture.

Phenols can get into the body in different ways. They can be inhaled, swallowed or absorbed via contact with the skin. Depending on how phenols have got into the body, there can be various symptoms.

For example, you may feel dizzy or get headaches. Your muscles may weaken. You may suffer breathing problems. You may also pass out. Seizures may also occur. Your heart may beat too quickly, too slowly, or irregularly. If there has been contact with the skin, the skin in the relevant places may be damaged.
