Quecksilber ist ein Schwermetall. Quecksilber kommt unter anderem in Thermometern oder Amalgam-Zahnfüllungen vor.
Ein Metall oder eine metallische Verbindung kann den Körper auf verschiedene Weisen schädigen. Die Beschwerden hängen oft davon ab, auf welche Art man mit dem Metall in Kontakt gekommen ist. Zum Beispiel kann es zu Hautschäden kommen, wenn man Hautkontakt mit einem Metall hatte. Wenn man ein Metall mit der Nahrung aufnimmt oder Metall-Dämpfe einatmet, kann es zu Vergiftungen kommen.
Die Aufnahme von Quecksilber kann die Schleimhäute schädigen und blutigen Durchfall verursachen. Auch die Nieren können geschädigt werden. Quecksilber kann außerdem das Zahnfleisch verfärben. Wenn man Quecksilber über längere Zeit aufnimmt, kann es zu Reizbarkeit, Konzentrations-Störungen und anderen Nerven-Schädigungen kommen.
