You have a thoracostomy in your chest.

A thoracostomy is an opening in the ribcage. A thoracostomy is artificially attached with surgery. The thoracostomy gives the thoracic cavity a connection to the outside through the skin.

Pathogens can get into the chest via different routes. The pathogens can cause the ribcage to become inflamed. This can result in pus or fluid collecting in the chest cavity. This fluid can damage the heart or lungs. To remove pus or fluid from the chest cavity, it can be drained out through a thoracostomy.

Stomas require special care.

You have had your thoracostomy tended to. A dressing may have been changed. The thoracostomy may also have been cleaned and cared for. The opening may have been checked or cleaned out.
