The heart pumps blood through the body. The heart may be damaged be various diseases. Your heart was probably severely damaged and can no longer pump blood strongly enough. Because of that, you have received a device that assists your heart. This device can be inserted into the body. But the device may also be outside of the body. The device is usually connected to large blood vessels. The device then pumps the blood through the body along with the heart. There are also devices that pump blood all by themselves. That is necessary for example if your own heart is no longer pumping at all.
