Neurological assessments: Electromyography [EMG]
An examination has been carried out to assess the currents in your muscles.
When muscle cells move, mild electrical currents flow. You have had these currents measured. The currents are sometimes measured using metal plates on the skin. Alternatively, special, thin needles may be inserted into the muscle. The currents in a specific muscle fiber can be measured in this way. Muscles are made up of many long cells. These cells form the muscle fibers.
Muscle movement is controlled by nerves. For information to get from the nerves to the muscles, nerve cells generate certain signals. These signals are absorbed by the muscle cells. The examination is carried out both when the muscle is relaxed and when it is tensed. The currents are recorded as lines and waves. When certain conditions are present in the nerves or muscles, the lines and waves look different to usual.
