The nervous system includes all the nerves in the body, as well as the brain and the spinal cord. The nerves run from the brain and spinal cord into the body. They convey information in the body.

Information, such as certain external stimuli, is passed on and processed by nerve cells. In doing this, mild electrical currents occur in the nerve cells.

Some of these currents can be measured via the scalp and various parts of the body. To take the measurements, metal plates are laid on the skin. The measurements involved the nerve currents being represented as lines or waves on a screen. When certain conditions are present, these lines and waves look different to usual.

The nerve currents are usually measured while the person is being given certain stimuli.
