Gastrointestinal function tests: gastric pH measurement: Unspecified

The pH value in your stomach was measured.

The stomach acid is produced in the stomach. The stomach acid is involved in digesting food. The stomach is located in the upper abdomen. The stomach has a curved shape, and is connected to the gullet (oesophagus) at its upper end and with the first part of the small intestine at its lower end. Between the stomach and the small intestine is a ring-shaped valve, the pylorus. The inside of the stomach is lined with mucous membrane.

To measure the pH value, a thin tube is pushed through the nose and throat into the stomach. The tube is used to measure the pH value over a certain period of time, and this is recorded by a small device. The pH value indicates how acid or alkaline a fluid is.
