1-424:
Biopsy without incision on mouth, oral cavity, larynx, pharynx and hematopoietic organs: Bone marrow biopsy without incision
A tissue sample has been taken from your bone marrow.
The bone marrow is inside bone. The blood cells are formed in the bone marrow of some of the bones. There are 3 different types of blood cell: red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. Red blood cells are important for carrying oxygen in the blood. White blood cells are part of the body’s immune system. They fight pathogens. Platelets are important for clotting blood.
A bone marrow sample is usually taken from the back of the pelvis. To do this, a small incision is made through the skin in the lower back. A hollow needle is then inserted into the bone. The needle is rotated in the bone and then withdrawn.
The tissue sample from inside the needle is then usually sent to a laboratory. There it can be examined more closely below the microscope, for example.
Additional indicator
If necessary, additional letters are appended to OPS codes to indicate which side of the body is affected.
- L: Left
- R: Right
- B: Both sides
