Diagnostic tracheobronchoscopy: Diagnostic tracheobronchoscopy: Flexible: With bronchoalveolar lavage

Your airways were examined from the inside.

When we breathe, the air gets into the body via the respiratory tract. The respiratory tract can be divided into the upper and the lower respiratory tracts. The nose and throat form part of the respiratory tract. The lower respiratory tract begins at the larynx in the throat. It includes the windpipe and the bronchia.

The test involved inserting a flexible tube into your airways. This is normally done via the nose or mouth. Images of the airways are sent out via the tube. In this way, the inside of the airways can be studied and assessed for any changes.

During the examination your airways were flushed out. This involves putting a fluid into the airways and then sucking it back out. The laboratory can then look to see, for example, whether the fluid contains any pathogens or specific cells.
