Diagnostic endoscopy of lower digestive tract: (Ileo-)colonoscopy using push-and-pull-back technique

You have had a colonoscopy.

The intestines are made up of the small intestine and the large intestine or colon. Most of the nutrients are absorbed in the small intestine. The large intestine (colon) is where water and salt are withdrawn from the stool. The last segment of the large intestine (colon) is the rectum. Stool then leaves the body through the anus.

The test involves inserting a tube via the anus. A camera is attached to the tube. This camera sends images to a screen. In this way, the intestine can be viewed from inside, and changes in the membrane can be searched for. The tube also has a balloon system on it. The balloon system can be used to push the tube deep into the intestine. This enables the small intestine to be studied, too.

Additional indicator

If necessary, additional letters are appended to OPS codes to indicate which side of the body is affected.

  • L: Left
  • R: Right
  • B: Both sides
