Diagnostic endoscopy of female genital organs: Diagnostic vaginoscopy
You have had an examination on your vagina.
You have had an internal examination of your vagina and the mouth of your womb. The vagina is tubular and leads from the outside to the uterus. There is a canal in the cervix that connects the vagina to the inside of the uterus. The orifice at the end of this canal is called the mouth of the womb (ostium uteri). The mouth of the womb is visible during an internal examination of the vagina. The vaginal walls are close together. A vaginal speculum can be used to separate the vaginal walls so that the tissue can be assessed. A vaginal speculum is a tube-shaped instrument with two movable sides. There are special, narrow vaginal speculums for children and adolescents.
