Zu Beginn der Schwangerschaft entwickelt sich in der Gebärmutter die Fruchtblase, die das Fruchtwasser enthält. Die Fruchtblase umgibt das Kind. Das Fruchtwasser kann man mit einer Nadel entnehmen, die durch die Bauchdecke gestochen wird. Mit einem Ultraschall-Gerät überprüft man währenddessen die genaue Position der Nadel und des Kindes im Bauch. Das entnommene Fruchtwasser kann anschließend im Labor untersucht werden.
