Other diagnostic puncture and aspiration: Diagnostic percutaneous puncture of joint or bursa: Other
You have had synovial fluid taken with a needle from a joint or a bursa.
The synovial fluid helps the joint’s surfaces to glide past each other. The synovial fluid also nourishes the cartilage that lines the joint surfaces of bones.
A bursa is a cushion of connective tissue filled with fluid. For example, there is a bursa beneath tendons or between bones and skin. The bursa prevents the tissue from rubbing together. A bursa also enables pressure to be distributed better.
The fluid taken can then be examined in the laboratory. Any indications of inflammation are searched for, for example.
