Medical evaluation for transplant: Medical evaluation and decision on indication for transplant: Full evaluation without placing patient on organ transplantation waiting list: Lung transplantation
An assessment has been made as to whether you should be given a lung from another person.
Sometimes vital organs no longer work properly. There can be a variety of reasons for that. The affected people can be helped with a properly functioning replacement organ. The appropriate organ or tissue can be donated by other people. The donor organ or donor tissue has to be removed surgically.
Your lungs are no longer working properly. You need lungs to breath. When we breathe in, oxygen enters the lungs and accumulates in the blood. This blood then flows to the heart. The heart then pumps the oxygen-rich blood throughout the body. All of the organs are supplied with oxygen as a result.
A questionnaire and various tests are usually used to assess whether a person is suitable for a donor lung. There are many different factors involved, such as one’s state of health.
There is usually a very limited number of donor organs available. So there is a waiting list for the organ concerned. You have not initially been put on the waiting list for a donor lung. There may be health reasons, for example, why one cannot or ought not to be given a donor lung.
