Medical evaluation for transplant: Medical evaluation and decision on indication for transplant: Re-evaluation with patient placed or retained on organ transplantation waiting list: Pancreas transplant

Another assessment has been made as to whether you should be given a pancreas from another person.

Sometimes vital organs no longer work properly. There can be a variety of reasons for that. The affected people can be helped with a properly functioning replacement organ. The appropriate organ or tissue can be donated by other people. The donor organ or donor tissue has to be removed surgically.

Your pancreas is no longer working properly. The pancreas is tucked behind the stomach in the upper abdomen. The pancreas produces messenger substances. The messenger substances control the sugar level in the blood. The pancreas also produces a fluid that is released into the intestines. This fluid contains substances that are important for the digestion of fats, proteins and sugars.

A questionnaire and various tests are usually used to assess whether a person is suitable for a donor pancreas. There are many different factors involved, such as one’s state of health.

There is usually a very limited number of donor organs available. So there is a waiting list for the organ concerned. You have been put on the waiting list for a donor pancreas or you continue to be on this list.
