You have had an operation after your lungs suffered damage.

The lungs are on the left and right side of the ribcage. They are also connected to the nose and mouth via the bronchial tubes and windpipe (trachea).

The damage to your lungs was closed by stitching. The operation involved opening your chest via an incision.
