5-345.3:
Operations on chest wall, pleura, mediastinum and diaphragm: Pleurodesis [obliteration of the pleural space]: Without decortication, thoracoscopic
The space around your lungs has been sealed during a thoracoscopy.
The lungs are surrounded by a smooth membrane. A smooth membrane like this is also located inside the ribs. There is a narrow cavity between the two membranes. This cavity is filled with some fluid.
Certain conditions can cause too much fluid or air to build up in the space around the lungs. The aim of sealing the gap around the lungs is to prevent this.
A bronchoscopy first involves making a small incision in the skin. A tube with a camera is pushed through this incision. This camera sends pictures of the inside of the body to a screen. Instruments such as forceps and scissors can be inserted through other small incisions in the chest.
Additional indicator
If necessary, additional letters are appended to OPS codes to indicate which side of the body is affected.
- L: Left
- R: Right
- B: Both sides
