Operations on chest wall, pleura, mediastinum and diaphragm: Plastic reconstruction of chest wall: Correction of a chest deformity: Pigeon breast

Your pigeon chest has been surgically repaired.

You had a pigeon chest. With pigeon chest, the front of the ribcage juts out in the middle where the sternum is. The sternum is a flat bone at the front of the chest. The ribs and the two collarbones are attached to the sternum.

The operation involved, firstly, making an incision into your sternum to enable your ribcage to be operated on directly. The connections between your sternum and your ribs where then detached. Your sternum was then lowered and reconnected to your ribs. Special splints, plates or screws are normally used to do this.
