Operations on cardiac valves and septa and vessels near the heart: Creation and enlargement of a septal defect in the heart: Other
An opening has been made in your cardiac septum, or an existing opening has been enlarged.
The heart pumps blood through the body. Inside the heart are 4 chambers. There are 2 heart atria and 2 ventricles. Both heart atria and both ventricles are separated from each other by a partition.
When an operation is being done on the cardiac septum, a heart-lung machine may be used. During surgery the task of a heart-lung machine is to replace the heart and lung functions. Amongst other things, the heart-lung machine enriches the blood with oxygen and pumps it around the body.
Additional indicator
If necessary, additional letters are appended to OPS codes to indicate which side of the body is affected.
- L: Left
- R: Right
- B: Both sides
