5-373.5:
Rhythm surgery and other operations on heart and pericardium: Excision and destruction of diseased heart tissue: MAZE procedure (alternative procedure)
You have had tissue in your left atrium surgically destroyed.
The heart pumps blood through the body. Inside the heart are 4 chambers. There are 2 heart atria and 2 ventricles. Both heart atria and both ventricles are separated from each other by a partition.
The electrical currents flow through the heart. The heart's electrical activity causes the heart muscle to contract. It begins at a site in your right atrium. Initially the electrical activity spreads to both atria. The electrical activity then flows on via a sort of cable to the ventricles.
If the heart’s electrical activity spreads in an uncontrolled way, the atria in the heart get out of control and beat too quickly. The operation causes scarring in the left atrium. As a result the heart’s electrical activity cannot spread so well. The heart should then beat more normally again.
Additional indicator
If necessary, additional letters are appended to OPS codes to indicate which side of the body is affected.
- L: Left
- R: Right
- B: Both sides
