5-375.1:
Rhythm surgery and other operations on heart and pericardium: Heart and heart-lung transplantation: Heart transplantation, heterotopic (piggyback)
You have been given a donor heart in addition to your own heart.
At the start of the operation, your chest was opened up so that your heart could be operated on directly. The donor heart was then inserted alongside your own heart. For this purpose, the donor heart was connected to various blood vessels with the aim of assisting your own heart.
A heart-lung machine is usually used during an operation like this. During surgery the task of a heart-lung machine is to replace the heart and lung functions. Amongst other things, the heart-lung machine enriches the blood with oxygen and pumps it around the body.
Additional indicator
