5-375.3:
Rhythm surgery and other operations on heart and pericardium: Heart and heart-lung transplantation: Heart retransplant during the same hospitalization
You have been given a donor heart once more.
At the start of the operation, your chest was opened up so that your heart could be operated on directly.
The operation involved first removing your own heart, then inserting the donor heart. The donor heart is usually connected to the various blood vessels that run into, or come out of, the heart. Sometimes part of the person’s own heart is retained in the chest, and then connected to the donor heart.
You have had this type of heart transplant again. This may be necessary if a donor heart fails to work properly, for example.
A heart-lung machine is usually used during an operation like this. During surgery the task of a heart-lung machine is to replace the heart and lung functions. Amongst other things, the heart-lung machine enriches the blood with oxygen and pumps it around the body.
Additional indicator
If necessary, additional letters are appended to OPS codes to indicate which side of the body is affected.
- L: Left
- R: Right
- B: Both sides
