5-379.1:
Rhythm surgery and other operations on heart and pericardium: Other operations on heart and pericardium: Ligature of an atrial auricle
You have had an atrial auricle surgically closed.
The heart pumps blood through the body. Inside the heart are 4 chambers. There are 2 heart atria and 2 ventricles. Both heart atria and both ventricles are separated from each other by a partition. There is a bulge on each of the atria. These bulges are the atrial auricles.
If the atria beat very quickly and irregularly, the blood can clot in the atrial auricles. A blood clot like this can block blood vessels in the body. So one or both atrial auricles are surgically closed so that the blood does not clot there.
Additional indicator
If necessary, additional letters are appended to OPS codes to indicate which side of the body is affected.
- L: Left
- R: Right
- B: Both sides
