Incision, excision and closure of blood vessels: Elimination, excision and stripping of varicose veins: Crossectomy and stripping: Great and small saphenous veins
You have been treated because you have varicose veins.
Varicose veins are enlarged veins. Veins are blood vessels that transport the blood back to the heart. In the leg there are superficial veins immediately below the skin and deep veins between the muscles. The superficial veins are connected to the deep veins by short veins. The blood flows to the heart via the deep veins. If the blood backs up in the veins, the veins can become enlarged.
You have had a small incision in your skin to sever and remove your great and small saphenous veins. The great saphenous vein runs along the inside of the leg. The small saphenous vein is at the back of the lower leg.
To remove the great and small saphenous veins, a thin tube was inserted into each vein via a small incision in your skin and pushed into your leg. The veins were then threaded to the tube and removed.
