Incision, excision and closure of blood vessels: Other excision of (diseased) blood vessels and transplant removal: Carotid artery, stent
You have had an artery in the your head or neck surgically removed.
Arteries are blood vessels that transport blood away from the heart. They supply all the tissue in the body with oxygen-rich blood.
In the past you had a small tube implanted into the artery in your head or neck. The purpose of this synthetic tube is to keep an artery open. You have now had the relevant artery removed.
Blood vessels may be removed if they have become enlarged somewhere, for example. When diseased or enlarged blood vessels are cut out, these blood vessels are no longer able to supply blood to the tissue. Care then needs to be taken that the tissue is supplied by other blood vessels. Blood vessels are also sometimes removed from one place in the body and implanted back into somewhere else.
Additional indicator
If necessary, additional letters are appended to OPS codes to indicate which side of the body is affected.
- L: Left
- R: Right
- B: Both sides
