5-386.96:
Incision, excision and closure of blood vessels: Other excision of (diseased) blood vessels and transplant removal: Superior vena cava
You have had your superior vena cava surgically removed.
Veins are blood vessels that transport the blood back to the heart.
The venae cavae are large blood vessels. They collect oxygen-poor blood from the body and carry it back to the heart. There is a superior and inferior vena cava.
Blood vessels may be removed if they have become enlarged somewhere, for example. When diseased or enlarged blood vessels are cut out, these blood vessels are no longer able to supply blood to the tissue. Care then needs to be taken that the tissue is supplied by other blood vessels. Blood vessels are also sometimes removed from one place in the body and implanted back into somewhere else.
Additional indicator
If necessary, additional letters are appended to OPS codes to indicate which side of the body is affected.
- L: Left
- R: Right
- B: Both sides
