5-386.9f:

Incision, excision and closure of blood vessels: Other excision of (diseased) blood vessels and transplant removal: Splenic vein

You have had your splenic vein surgically removed.

Veins are blood vessels that transport the blood back to the heart.

The spleen is on the top left side of the abdomen. Old blood cells are broken down in the spleen. Furthermore, defense cells are stored. If the defense cells are needed, they are then released from the spleen into the blood.

Blood vessels may be removed if they have become enlarged somewhere, for example. When diseased or enlarged blood vessels are cut out, these blood vessels are no longer able to supply blood to the tissue. Care then needs to be taken that the tissue is supplied by other blood vessels. Blood vessels are also sometimes removed from one place in the body and implanted back into somewhere else.
