Your portal vein has been connected to your inferior vena cava.

The portal vein transports nutrient-rich blood from the gastrointestinal area to the liver. The liver is an important organ on the top right of the abdomen. For example, it helps with blood clotting and detoxifying the body. Nutrients from food are processed in the liver.

The venae cavae are large blood vessels. They collect oxygen-poor blood from the body and carry it back to the heart. There is a superior and inferior vena cava.

With some conditions, the blood can back up in the abdomen before the liver. The purpose of your artificial connection is that some of the blood from your gastrointestinal area will not flow through your liver. As a result, the blood from your abdomen will flow back to the heart by a different route.
