Your portal vein has been connected to one of your mesenteric veins.

Veins are blood vessels that transport the blood back to the heart. Blood flows from the intestine to the portal vein through the mesenteric veins. The portal vein transports nutrient-rich blood from the gastrointestinal area to the liver. The liver is an important organ on the top right of the abdomen. For example, it helps with blood clotting and detoxifying the body. Nutrients from food are processed in the liver.

With some conditions, the blood can back up in the abdomen before the liver. The purpose of your artificial connection is that some of the blood from your gastrointestinal area will flow to your liver by an unusual route.

Additional indicator
