Other operations on blood vessels and additional information about operations on blood vessels: Operations on the carotid body and other paraganglia: Excision, with nerve monitoring
You have had an operation on a group of special nerve cells.
There are groups of special nerve cells in some blood vessels in the head and neck. These nerve cells measure, for example, the oxygen and carbon dioxide content in the blood. If there is any change in the content of these substances in the blood, the nerve cells can send out messenger substances. These messenger substances affect the breathing.
The operation involved making an incision in your neck via which the surrounding tissue was opened or moved. The group of special nerve cells has been removed. The operation involved implanting a special aid. The purpose of this aid is to prevent the operation damaging any nerves.
