Other operations on small and large intestine: Other intestinal reconstruction: Small intestine retransplantation during the same hospitalization: Jejunum
You have had the small intestine of another person implanted.
The small intestine is the longest section of the digestive tract. It consists of 3 sections. The 1st section begins immediately after the stomach and is called the duodenum. The gallbladder and the pancreas secrete the digestive juices in this section. The jejunum and ileum sections come next. The nutrients are absorbed into the blood from the food in the small intestine. The small intestine is followed by the large intestine.
If the small intestine is not working properly, it can be replaced by another person’s small intestine. The operation usually involves removing the remaining part of the intestine as a first step. The donor small intestine is then implanted and connected to your blood circulation.
You have had more than one donor small intestine. This may be necessary if a small intestine fails to work properly, for example.
