5-549.5:
Other operations in the abdominal area: Other abdominal operations: Laparoscopy with drain
Your abdominal wall was surgically opened and a tube was inserted.
You have had a laparoscopy, which involved inserting a tube into your abdomen. This tube can be used to drain, or suck out, wound fluid, blood or pus, for example.
A laparoscopy first involves making a small incision in the abdomen. A tube with a camera is pushed through this incision into the abdomen. This camera sends pictures of the inside of the abdomen to a screen. Tools such as forceps and scissors can be inserted through other small incisions in the abdomen.
In a laparoscopy, special fluids may also be used to flush out the abdominal cavity. This may be necessary if there is inflammation, for example.
