You have had an episiotomy.

The perineum is the region between the anus and vagina. An episiotomy involves using special scissors to cut through the perineum between the vaginal opening and the anus. The aim is to widen the vaginal opening for the birth.

After the birth, and depending on the length of the episiotomy, it can be stitched back up again.
