OPS-Code 5-789.0k:
Operations on other bones: Other operations on the bone: Suture of periosteum: Proximal tibia
The periosteum was sutured during an operation on the upper end of your tibia.
There are 2 bones in the lower leg, the tibia and the fibula. The tibia is on the inside of the leg. The fibula is on the outside of the leg. Both bones in the lower leg have an upper, middle and lower section. The top end of the tibia is connected to the femur by the knee joint. The top ends of the tibia and fibula are also connected by a joint just below the knee joint.
The periosteum is a thin layer that almost completely envelops the bones. The periosteum has numerous functions, including supplying the bones with nutrients. There are also nerves within it, making it highly sensitive to pain.
