The foot is made up of a lot of small bones and joints. The lower leg is connected to the tarsus. Then comes the metatarsus and then the individual toes. The tarsus consists of 7 tarsal bones. The tarsal bones form the rear part of the foot. The anklebone is part of the tarsus. The foot connects to the lower leg via the talus. This connection is known as the upper ankle joint.
You had an operation to have the fragments of your ankle bone returned to their normal position and put back together. Your ankle bone was then stabilized using a special fixation system and other special devices.
To stabilize bones or parts of bones, various aids can be used. They can be made of metal or plastic, for example. The special fixation system involves inserting metal pins or screws through the skin from outside and into the bone. These are then joined to one another outside the body using a holding system.
